A junior from the College of William & Mary who is studying abroad in Egypt has been flown to Turkey as part of an voluntary evacuation of American citizens amid the country's turmoil.
The unnamed student was taking part in a third-party study program at the American University in Cairo. Egyptian citizens began revolting over the weekend in protest of President Honsi Mubarak, who has ruled the country for more than 30 years. Protests spread to the streets, and Mubarak dismissed his government.
The U.S. Embassy urged Americans to evacuate the country and rented planes to evacuate them to various points.
W&M spokesman Brian Whitson said Tuesday morning that the student's plane landed safely in Istanbul Monday night. He will continue his journey back to the United States from there.
