The director of the University of Utah's Middle East Center, brought in 18 months ago to help it rebuild after a period of turmoil, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into allegations of plagiarism, and the center's finances are under new scrutiny, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. Students and faculty members raised the allegations against the director, Bahman Baktiari, saying he appeared to have borrowed passages from other authors in several essays, including one that was published by the newspaper. Mr. Baktiari has said he did not know he was required to attribute source material for newspaper opinion pieces. Robert D. Newman, dean of the College of Humanities, has taken control of the center's finances after an audit found expenses had outpaced revenue. The center lost a major federal grant last summer.
