Campus Watch in the MediaLetter to the Editor: Free speech
by Nuri Jazairi http://www.campus-watch.org/article/id/497 Toronto -- You are wrong in treating Daniel Pipes' views as legitimate "free speech" (Free To Speak -- editorial, Jan. 29). The Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees freedom of expression subject to "reasonable limits." Such reasonable limits have been applied in the past and upheld by the Supreme Court of Canada in cases concerned with anti-Semitic speech. Mr. Pipes is advocating racial and political repression in universities in particular. A restriction on his right to free speech would have been justified to protect the fundamental rights and reputations of others. York University should have refused him access to its facilities.
