An Iranian women's rights activist who studies in California, Esha Momeni, has been arrested for a driving offence in the capital, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.
"Esha Momeni, a student in California who returned to Iran two months ago to see her family and for some studies, was arrested by the highway police on October 15" and taken to Evin prison, the moderate daily Kargozaran said.
Momeni, who is a photographer and graduate student, is a member of the Change for Equality campaign, its website said. She was arrested while at the wheel for illegally overtaking another vehicle.
Change for Equality said Esha had since her return to Iran "conducted video interviews with members of the One Million Signatures Campaign in Tehran" that aims to ensure equal rights for women in the Islamic republic.
Tehran has been exerting pressure on women's rights advocates, and several have been arrested in recent years for demanding changes to Iranian laws or for taking part in public protests.
