Fatally Stabbed BU Professor Was Fulbright Scholar and Accomplished Author [on Richard Antoun]

77 year-old Dr. Richard T. Antoun was a Fulbright Scholar and past president of the Middle East Studies Association.

Antoun was fatally stabbed yesterday by a Binghamton University anthropology student.

He had taught at Indiana University, the University of Chicago, Cairo University, the American University of Beirut and Manchester University, England.

His interests included comparative religion, peasant and post-peasant societies, and transnational migration.

An expert on Jordan and Iran as well as religious fundamentalist movements, Dr. Antoun was the author of five books and numerous journal articles and book chapters on a wide variety of topics related to the social, cultural, political, and religious dimensions of the Middle East region.

Campus officials say the suspect who killed Antoun is in custody, but have yet to release his name or information.

University Police and the New York State Police continue to investigate.
