Antoun's Life Celebrated

The life of a fallen friend and colleague is remembered at Binghamton University.

Last December, Professor Richard Antoun was fatally stabbed on campus by a graduate student.

Those who knew him celebrated his life and accomplishments Friday.

B.U. President Lois DeFleur opened the ceremony.

She described how he welcomed her when she arrived on campus.

Antoun's wife, Roz, says her husband considered the school his second home.

His colleagues say his presence is missed at the university.

"I think it's very important for all of us to step back and say we've lost somebody, he was an important person to us, here's why he was important, here's what he did for us, here's what he did for the university, and we need to continue," said Donald Quataert, a history professor at B.U.

Later this Spring, an Eastern Red Bud Tree will be planted in memory of Antoun.

It is a symbol of broad understanding of culture.

It will be planted near his office in the Science 1 building.
