SFSU Nir Barkat Protest |
Please sign the petition and letting SFSU President Leslie Wong know that SFSU's partnership with a university that promotes terrorism against Israelis is outrageous and unacceptable.
This is not the first time SFSU's administration has failed to address the longstanding problem of anti-Israel activity on campus.
Confirming the findings of an independent investigation into the disruption of Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat's lecture earlier this year, President Wong himself admitted "the responsibility for the inadequate response prior to, during and following the event falls squarely on the shoulders of San Francisco State University administrators. On April 6, we failed our students — both the event attendees and the protesters — through multiple inactions."
However, the student group that disrupted Barkat's talk, the virulently anti-Israel General Union of Palestinian Students (GUPS), was neither reprimanded nor punished for violating clear rules about behavior on campus. In a statement on the investigation, GUPS claimed to have been "vindicated" before resuming the anti-Israel vitriol:
"The report finds that our protest was disruptive, but for students of conscience, the real disruption was the mayor of occupied Jerusalem coming to campus. . . . Not only were we subjected to this hate monger, but we were investigated for months and publicly smeared as violent and anti-Semitic. The report proves that these allegations are false."
Clearly, SFSU has a long way to go before all students feel safe and respected on campus. Ending SFSU's MOU with anti-Semitism-terrorism-promoting An-Najah University will be a very good start.
