Campus Watch Responds:

Beth Slovic of Willamette Week in Portland, Oregon, did well to cover a local story on Stanford professor of Middle East studies Joel Beinin's latest flirtation with Portland State University. But she commits an all-too-common error in claiming that Campus Watch is affiliated with David Horowitz, and that our concern is with left-right politics:

Google "Joel Beinin" and prepare for a war of words.

"If one individual can showcase all the flaws of Middle East Studies in academia, Joel Beinin is that man," proclaims Campus-watch.org, a right-wing website affiliated with the neoconservative activist David Horowitz.

Campus Watch has no affiliation whatsoever with David Horowitz. Rather, CW is a project of the Middle East Forum, a nonprofit Philadelphia think tank.

Moreover, our concerns are not those of the "right-wing," but of anyone who objects to the sloppy, tendentious scholarship that unfortunately characterizes much of today's Middle East studies establishment.
